Wood Fired Kiln

Kiln construction

Kiln open

Maple Creek Artisan School boasts one of the largest wood fired kilns in Ohio. This two chambered kiln allows us to ash-glaze as well as salt/soda-glaze pottery in a tradition that keeps the proud heritage of Appalachia alive.

The 300 sq. ft. kiln is open to the public. We encourage all potters who would like to experience a wood firing to join us. Each firing is truly a community event; with dozens of potters vying for space in the kiln, scores of volunteers stoking the fire for three days straight and countless visitors stopping by for the kiln openings.

The kiln and shelter frame were completed in October,2007. With the grant awarded us by the Fine Arts Fund of Cincinnati, the roof raising on Sept. 19, went perfectly.

We would like to thank Jeff and Sandra Ashba of The Organic Farm at Bear Creek for their generous gift of the water line needed for our safety hydrant. In addition, we would like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Daniel T. Burke for their generous gift of a frost-free hydrant. These two items will help ensure the safety of our many potters and volunteers during firings.

We are pleased to thank Dennis & Sherry Mummert, two of our most dedicated volunteers, for matching donations for the Roof Project. Many thanks.

We're in the process of choosing a date for the first firing of 2010. If you're interested in firing with us please email or call and let us know.
