Steve Herndon fulfilled a personal dream when he founded Maple Creek Artisan Center and School in 2005. But his love of Appalachian culture and art began many years before. As a self-taught artist, Steve began his career building log and timber frame homes. Many of his clients began asking for special pieces. So what began as a hobby in woodworking soon grew. Steve founded Wolfhaus Handcrafted Originals (WHO), and has crafted much of the furniture in our gallery. Steve especially likes to use the antique woods re-sawn from barn beams. Steve says, "The character of the old wood makes each piece of furniture unique." WHO creates custom, heirloom quality furniture that all will appreciate for many years to come.
Steve learned the art of pottery, basket weaving, and wood carving and turning, just to name a few. You can see much of his works in our gallery, and if you take a class with us, you might find him sitting next to you, learning something new.
