Beginning Pottery Classes
Pottery is one of the oldest human technologies and art-forms, and remains a major industry today. There are several methods for making ceramic pieces.
Beginning Wheel Throwing
A ball of clay is placed in the center of a turntable or 'wheel.' The wheel rotates rapidly while the solid ball of soft clay is pressed, squeezed, and pulled gently upwards and outwards into a hollow shape.
This course introduces you to the pottery wheel. You will learn throwing techniques, and the differences in clay bodies and glazes. At the end of the course you will have several finished pieces. All materials and tools are provided. If you wish, you may buy a tool kit and/or additional clay. During this time you may work on your own, or ask the instructor for assistance. Pottery wheels at the Artisan Center are also available for practice outside of class time.
Next session begins September 11th, 1:30-4 p.m.
Instructor: Steve Herndon
Cost: $135
Time: 2 1/2 Hours per week, six week course
Tool Kit: $15 (optional)
Additional Clay: Varies on type and amount
Bonsai Pottery
Caring for a Bonsai tree is a time honored tradition which takes much patience. In this workshop you'll receive and learn to care for your Bonsai, while making your very own pot for that tree. The pots will be made using slab/handbuilding techniques.
Cost: $135
Time: 3 Hours per week, five week course
Halloween Handbuilding
Potter Daniel Luck is known for his wild masks and sculptures. Learn the tricks of the trade from him in this special Halloween Day workshop. Pack a lunch.
Cost: $30
Time: 5 Hours
Handbuilding
This is the earliest and the most individualized and direct forming method. Wares can be constructed by hand from coils of clay, from flat slabs of clay, from solid balls of clay or some combination of these. Hand building is slower and more gradual than wheel-throwing, but it offers the potter a high degree of control over the size and shape of wares.
Rather than throwing pottery on a wheel, in this class you learn to make pottery using the coil method, pinching, or building with slabs. Students will also glaze and fire a finished piece.
Cost: $45
Time: 6 Hours over two Saturdays
