Richard Schaeffer teaches the skills of the
blacksmith. Dick is a retired engineer and is now happy making his
art with his hands.
|
Bobby Edwards teaches White Oak Basket making. Baskets
from this project are as much wood working as basket making.
Beginning with a tree, each piece of the basket is split or carved from
the tree. Bobby and Mik are patient teaches and enjoy passing on
this Appalachian tradition.
|
Sherry Mummert weaves beautiful blankets, scarves, throws,
rugs, and more. She graciously passes on her knowledge and tricks of
the trade to her students. She will teach you to warp the loom, how
read a pattern, create your own, and more.

Welcome to the
Artisan
School
at Maple Creek
The mission of our school is to uphold the traditions of handcrafting
functional and decorative art through teaching, emphasizing the hands on
experience, with the hope of inspiring many new artists.
We currently have over twenty programs in existence and continue to
develop more. Our class instructors
are accomplished artists in their field. The
artists are very dedicated to our cause, most selling their work professionally
around the country, including here at Maple Creek.
Many are full time artists and all of them appreciate the opportunity to
help us continue the craft education process with their knowledge and
inspiration.
Our goals for this year are set very high, and thanks to everyone's hard
work, we can be very proud of what we have accomplished.
We have only just begun; future projects and expansions are on the
horizon. Following is a list of
planned expansions that are already on the books.
- Wood
fired two chamber kiln – used to fire ash glazed and salt glazed
stoneware. - Done.
- A
shelter over the raku and wood kiln site – to protect our current kiln
investment and make use of more to the seasons.
- Expansion
of the Pottery Studio – encompassing all of the lower level.
- Building
of another beautiful log cabin to use as the fiber art studio – to be
build just above the "office" cabin in view and accessible to the
gallery (we already have the logs).
- Sleeping
room cabins for use as dormitory for out of town students and artist.
A chance to "Live the Dream".
- A
post and Beam wood workers studio – for carving, turning, and furniture
making classes (we have access to an old barn for this structure).
As you can see, we have a great vision and we are very to
committed to accomplishing our goals.
We would like to ask you to help us with our goals in any way you can.
Feel free to talk to Steve or our staff about how you can help support
our cause, a particular project, or a favorite art form.
