White Oak Baskets
|

|
|
White
Oak Baskets are functional as well as decorative, although today they are
made as folk art with little intention of being used.
White Oak Basket making is time consuming and hard work.
Often it takes several hours to select a white oak tree that can be
used to make baskets.
Once the tree has been cut down with an axe, it is split using the
axe, wedges and a maul.
Using hand tools such as a knife, fro and an axe the tree is
processed into splints, handles and a rim.
It can take several hours to make a good basket and a more
complicated basket can take 20 or more hours to complete.
As you look at the baskets, enjoy them and remember they are a part
of our past worth being preserved.
